Leigh Ledare
Zürich

20 March — 17 April 2021
Office Baroque, Antwerp

For the final exhibition in its spaces on Harmoniestraat, Office Baroque will be showing a selection of works made by Leigh Ledare for Manifesta 11 in 2016 for his project titled ‘Large Group (Zurich)’. This includes a 68-minute video from one of many sessions that took place over the course of a social psychology conference that Ledare organized, in which a disparate group of 21 Zürich residents encountered one another under the guidance of six psychologists over the course of three highly structured days. Enacting a temporary institution whose purpose is to study itself, this work served as the initial study for Ledare’s feature length film ‘The Task’ (2017) which was exhibited in 2019 at Office Baroque’s Brussels gallery.

In addition to the video (enacted in Swiss German and subtitled in English) Office Baroque will display a suite of 28 drawings from the project which, divided into two groupings, act as stand-ins for both the participants group and the psychologists. Each drawing started with the mounting of actors postcards as a stand-in for one of the individuals in the group, before being augmented with notes and marginalia written by Ledare. Serving as sketches of the artist’s ideas and observations, these drawings offer a glimpse into Ledare's working process, in turn reflecting the thoughts and anxieties of Ledare's own role inside the work.
