Margaret Salmon.
With her intimate approach, Margaret Salmon’s filmic portraits weave poetry, ethnography and documentary together. In her films, she studies and discloses the emotive and social dynamics of her subjects, that often signify certain social-political archetypes like mothers, firemen, soldiers and lovers. Her work characterises a sincere pursuit for collaboration with individuals unfamiliar being filmed, reminding of cinematic movements like Italian neorealism. Aware of her presence behind the camera, Salmon assumes the performative perspective of an active participant rather than forcing her gaze upon her subjects, resulting in an oeuvre that elicits empathy.
